Jack Antonoff and Lorde may not be dating, but he certainly has her back.
On Wednesday evening, The Ally Coalition — a nonprofit founded by the music producer and his sister Rachel Antonoff — held its fourth annual talent show benefit at NYC’s Town Hall. The event featured MANY hot artists as Lorde, Antonoff’s Bleachers, Kacey Musgraves, The National, and countless others performed.

However, the charity show wasn’t without a little controversy, as one heckler tried to drag the New Zealand songstress for her stance on Israel. As you surely saw, in December, the Melodrama singer announced her to decision to cancel her Tel Aviv concert amid the ongoing cultural boycott.
So, unsurprisingly, this controversy was brought up during Wednesday’s gig. After performing Carly Rae Jepsen‘s Run Away With Me, Lorde told the crowd:
“You’re all so nice. I wish every show this nice.”
That’s when someone in the audience shouted something unintelligible. When the 21-year-old asked the complainant to repeat what he said, he shouted once more:
“In Israel it’s nice.”
Lorde recoiled at the shade, but Jack made sure to defend his frequent collaborator. He clapped back with:
“Woah, hang on. We’re here raising a shit ton of money. Fuck the negativity.”
Fair point. After explaining that the evening wasn’t about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he added:
“You know who’s nice? [This person] right here.”
While trying to regain composure, the two artists bantered. While Jack stated that the “motherfucker better donate $10,000,” Lorde noted:
“I’m sure the Israeli people are very nice and I can’t wait to meet them one day.”

Awkward. Still, most of the evening was pretty lovely, as Lorde even covered one of The Cranberries‘ songs in honor of late singer Dolores O’ Riordan. Be sure to ch-ch-check out some of the musical highlights (below).
