Taylor Swift is ready to take back what’s hers… whether she’s legally allowed to or not!
As we reported, the pop superstar put Scooter Braun in her (and her fans’) crosshairs back in June when she wrote a fiery Tumblr post accusing the manager of purchasing her masters without giving her an “opportunity” to buy them herself.
The evocative note — in which the 29-year-old claimed Braun had effectively “stripped [her] of [her] life’s work” — sparked an outcry among Swift sympathizers worldwide, many of whom suggested the singer re-record her past hits as a way of regaining control of her catalog.
Well, according to T.Swift herself, that just might happen!

The Lover songstress made the revelation in an interview with CBS This Morning set to air on Sunday, August 25. When asked by reporter Tracy Smith if she planned to re-record her early songs as a means of taking back her power, Tay replied:
“Oh yeah.”
When Smith clarified if this was, in fact, “a plan” for the singer, she confirmed:
“Yeah, absolutely.”
Taylor has since liked a few Tumblr posts confirming this — so, there you have it. Look what you made her do, Scooter. Look what you made her do.
Only… she technically can’t do it — at least not according to a Page Six source!
A music industry expert with knowledge of the deal told the outlet it would be “impossible” for Swift to re-record her old songs because her contract forbids it. This expert explained:
“She can’t re-record because she’s not contractually allowed to do so. The only thing she could be allowed to do is…re-do the lyrics, but contractually she can’t. Even if she could, no one would want old songs with new lyrics.”
This source has clearly never met a Swiftie…
Per the industry expert, most record labels had put this type of safeguard into their contracts with artists after Prince’s bold move to re-record his masters as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.
But, we should note another industry source told the outlet Swift will, in fact, be able to re-record her earlier songs. So, maybe she can make this Prince-like power move after all.

Either way, Taylor is far from the only artist to not own her masters. After the news first broke, media mogul David Geffen explained to the New York Times:
“This kind of deal is neither unusual or controversial. She didn’t want to put up $300 million. Someone else did. They offered her a deal that she rejected to get ownership of her masters. Only time will tell who made the wise decision.”
Whether or not Swift was actually offered the chance to buy her masters differs, depending on who you ask.
Swift told Smith she only found out about the acquisition of her music — which includes everything she released with Big Machine Records up through her Reputation album — when it was announced with the rest of the world online, claiming she wasn’t warned about the purchase in advance.
Big Machine CEO Scott Borchetta, however, alleged otherwise in a post on the label’s website titled, “So, It’s Time For Some Truth…” which claims Tay was made aware of the situation in advance and “she chose to leave.”
We’ll see if Tay chooses to actually re-record her early work. Do U think she’s up for it?
