It’s never easy to hear about your parents breaking up. But to find out about it from TV? So much more brutal! Just ask Alexia Umansky!
The bombshell report that Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky separated after 27 years of marriage broke in July 2023. Of course, their daughters Farrah, Sophia, Portia, and Alexia had been upset over their parents’ breakup. But what really stung for the girls was how they learned about it! Probably at the same time YOU did!

Yeah, they didn’t even know what was going on with Mauricio and Kyle until the stories dropped online. No heads up. Nothing! During an appearance on Scrubbing In with Becca Tilley & Tanya Rad podcast on Thursday, Alexia opened up about that stomach-dropping moment. She said:
“We found out from (an) article. The news of my parents’ separation came out before we had ever talked about it as a family internally. And then the cameras for ‘Buying Beverly Hills’ were coming the very next day.”
The 27-year-old real estate agent noted her family normally would turn a blind eye to any reports about their lives. After all, they’re on reality TV, how real is any of that stuff? However, everyone knew this one could not be ignored. So instead of brushing the news under the rug, Alexia and her family “leaned in.” Especially since the cameras were rolling for the second season of Buying Beverly Hills anyway — may as well make the drama count, right? Alexia explained:
“We just kind of had a moment, we were like, ‘We need to start talking.’ And the cameras were gonna be there anyway, so we just leaned in. And that was in July. So a lot has changed since then. But now we talked about everything.”
We all watched the family conversations about Kyle and Mauricio’s breakup play out onscreen. And things got super emotional for Alexia, Sophia, Portia, and Farrah as he opened up about the marital issues between the former couple. While talking about that hard group conversation, the reality star made it clear this was not all for the cameras. Everything that happened in that moment was “as real as it gets”:
“What was filmed was two of the four big conversations we’ve had as a family. We had one conversation when the news came out, but my sister Farrah wasn’t there. So the next day when the cameras came, Farrah came and that was the first, full conversation as a family we had. So that was as real as it gets, as honest and open as it gets, which is so crazy.”
Alexia added she and her sisters ultimately felt “out of the loop” when the news broke — and they don’t want that to happen ever again:
“That was the first conversation with sisters and just dad that we were like, we need to be doing this more. We feel out of the loop. We’re learning things from TMZ and it doesn’t feel fair.”
