It had felt like the man who wouldn’t be king was the lone holdout when it comes to admitting Game Of Thrones totally blew the landing. We’ve heard Emilia Clarke, Natalie Dormer, Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie, Conleth Hill, and Maisie Williams all admit to varying degrees to having issues with how the show went the last couple seasons and particularly the finale.

But this was Jon Snow! He LOVED Thrones. And he was coming back for a sequel series! So he was never going to agree it didn’t work out… and yet. Here he is!

Speaking with GQ on Monday, he conceded some of the criticism was spot on, particularly that the ending was rushed. Though with the concession he also added how he doesn’t think there was a solution to that particular problem:

“I think if there was any fault with the end of Thrones, is that we were all so f**king tired, we couldn’t have gone on longer. And so I understand some people thought it was rushed and I might agree with them. But I’m not sure there was any alternative. I look at pictures of me in that final season and I look exhausted. I look spent. I didn’t have another season in me.”

Huh. That’s an interesting point we hadn’t considered. We always thought he was the one cast member who was ready to stay in Westeros forever! We guess not!

As far as the much-derided ending, he may not be willing to make specific attacks — but he agrees at least that it was far from perfect:

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn’t quite work.”

That’s one way to put it! Certainly with the amazing work being put in by the cast and craftspeople toward the end, we get why he’d be hesitant to do any outright bashing. So that may be as brutal as it gets from Kit.

But it’s interesting to hear how important it was to him not to put out any other questionable quality GOT material. When asked what the heck happened to his spinoff that seems to have been canceled, he said:

“What I can tell you is it was HBO that came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no. And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way. We spent a couple of years back and forth developing it. And it just didn’t… nothing got us excited enough. In the end, I kind of backed out and said, ‘I think if we push this any further and keep developing it we could end up with something that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want.'”

Certainly the last thing Thrones fans wanted after Season 8 was something that didn’t feel quite right.

For the Game of Thrones star, sobriety hasn’t been something that came easy. Back in 2019, he checked into rehab to deal with the stress of the famous HBO series ending and his alcohol abuse. But with some necessary work, he managed to come out the other side a new man! Amazing!

But just how bad was it before? Well, he’s now giving insight into those dark days. During an interview with GQ Hype published on Monday, the 37-year-old opened up about his journey to sobriety:

“The very fact that I can be proud of [sobriety] is an achievement. Because before getting sober, I would stare in the mirror and call myself a c**t. I’d hate myself. I would literally despise myself and not be proud of anything I’d done. I couldn’t be proud.”

Whoa!!

We’ve long heard rumors about what he would get up to while out drinking… and let’s just say the Old Gods would NOT have approved. So if there’s any truth the them, we’re not surprised to hear how ashamed he is of his old ways.

Back when he checked into rehab amid GoT’s ending, a friend explained his decision to Page Six:

“He realized ‘this is it — this is the end.’ It was something they had all worked so hard on for so many years. He had a moment of, ‘what next?’”

He was on the show for nearly a decade, so we can understand that… But there was so much else to cherish! Namely, his lovely wife Rose Leslie and the two kids they would go on to welcome together! Harington told GQ on Monday:

“So the fact that I am proud of getting sober is in and of itself a mark of being an entirely different person. And now, every set I step onto, whatever work I do, I’m proud of, because I know I put everything into it. Whereas before I had this huge monkey on my back that was just, like, weighing me down. So yeah, the whole nature of being proud of myself is a relatively new prospect for me.”

We’re so glad to hear he’s gotten to where he is today. As for what the future holds, he admitted:

“Look, I can’t tell what the future brings. I might have one massive, messy, chaotic relapse, and I hope that doesn’t happen. But I think I protect myself by talking about it.”

Per Page Six, the duo opted to be private with the birth and its aftermath. Their second child, a daughter, was born at some point before the big July 3 reveal, per that outlet. A rep for the actors stated:

“They’re delighted to have welcomed a little girl into the family.”

The Game Of Thrones alums also previously welcomed a son, who was born in 2021. Love it!

Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke got together for a mini Game of Thrones reunion on Saturday night while celebrating the birthday of the hit series co-creator David Benioff. Both actors shared smiling shots of each other, including one where the 42-year-old hunk playfully swept Clarke off her feet. Clarke wrote in the caption alongside the sweet snapshot:

“When your sun and stars rolls into town you check that he can still bench press a Khaleesi.”

The man who stole our hearts as hero Jon Snow appeared on The Jess Cagle Show on SiriusXM on Monday, ostensibly promoting his role in Season Two of the Amazon series Modern Love.

However, the talk got really deep really fast as host Jess Cagle asked about the break Kit took from acting right after the end of the HBO hit.

The young actor checked himself into rehab in the Summer of 2019, just after the show’s controversial finale aired. Speaking about the struggles he had, he directly linked them to filming GOT, saying:

“I kind of, I went through kind of some mental health difficulties after Thrones, and during the end of Thrones, to be honest. And I think it was directly to do with the nature of the show and what I’d been doing for years. I think I took a sort of a break after Thrones where I said ‘I don’t want to work for a year, I want to really kind of concentrate on myself.’ And I think I’m really, I’m really happy I did that.”

While he didn’t get too in depth about what the issues were with the show, he did contrast the “intense” work he was doing for so long with his latest role on the rom com anthology:

“And then so coming back to work and deciding what to take and what to choose, and, um, you know, you couldn’t predict the pandemic. So just when I was wanting to come back to work, the pandemic hit. So I was like, ‘oh, for God’s sake.’ But yeah, doing, doing this Modern Love episode was a bit like you don’t have to live in that intense place all the time. Why don’t you do something that takes the weight off? Why don’t you do something fun? And I think that was part of my thinking on this one.”

Wow, he really did need to take “the weight off” after all of that.

Spoilers for GOT, but his character does go through hell, having to fight literal monsters but also live on as his father, mother, brothers, and two lovers die — half of which he has to watch up close. So you can imagine how for a young actor getting into that headspace for a decade straight can get messed up.

And of course we all saw in that brilliant HBO documentary The Last Watch, which aired after the finale, how Kit really did cry while delivering a speech to the crew after they wrapped his final scene on the show. He said:

“I feel like my heart is breaking. I love this show more than I think, anything. It has never been a job for me. It’s been my life. This will always be the greatest thing I’ll ever do and be a part of. You all have been my family. I love you for it. Thank you so much.”

So it was clear even then the show — and a huge chapter of his life — ending was weighing on him. But maybe it wasn’t until he was out the other end of it that he could look back and realize just how stressed he was during filming.

He does say that because of meeting his future wife, Rose Leslie, during filming the show will always be a crucial part of his life — and one he can never outright complain about! He said:

“I met my wife. My child is a direct result of Game of Thrones. I still have very, very good friends from that show. It did nothing but wonders for me.”

When asked the GOT moment that stays in his head the most he responded thoughtfully:

“It’s weirdly season two. I think probably because that’s when I met Rose [Leslie], but season two was when it was, it was taking off and it was becoming kind of, we realized we were onto something good. And I remember being, shooting up on this incredible glacier in Iceland, and I went off to take a pee, somewhere in the wilds of Iceland. And I just looked out over this glacier and I thought, ‘God, I got the best job in the world.’ And that always sticks out to me because I, if I’m ever feeling grumpy about my lot, which believe me, I can do amazingly, I think of that. And I think now you’ve got a pretty special job.”

That didn’t mean the show wasn’t without its perils. When Jess asks how he avoided going “crazy” like many young actors catapulted into megastardom would and seemingly settling down with the love of his life instead, Kit does note that the two were not always together at that time.

“I spent the longest of time during, you know, me, for years, me and Rose on and off. And, and it’s sort of like, I, I definitely would have lost my way at times through Thrones. It’s very hard not to.”

He credits his loved ones, including Rose, with keeping him on the straight and narrow through all those times:

“I have very, very good friends and very good family and I have Rose and all of those things at the end of the day kept me quite kept me quite grounded. I think, I hope, not that I didn’t have difficulties.”

How does he feel about Thrones these days, now that he’s well over a year out from it? He sounds more in awe than anything, saying:

“It had a real cultural impact and, and that’s something I’m really proud of being part of it. It’s been… part of the journey since it finished was just becoming proud of that show, you know, like did it… and not running away from it and not running away from what it was and who I played in it, but just owning it and being proud of everything about it really. Yeah, long may it continue. I really wish them luck with the, with what they’re doing next. I’m going to watch it. And I think it’s a fascinating, it came at a fascinating time. It, it sort of, it, it sort of, it was spread out over a fascinating time globally I think, Thrones. I’m so glad we got it done before the pandemic, because it never would have got done, you know.”

Speaking of the pandemic, for Kit it was a very strange time. While many suffered, he and Rose survived what many other couples didn’t — being forced to spend all their time together:

“I think that, you know, the old expression of a good war or a bad war, uh, I had a good, a good pandemic. Um, and I say that because, you know, when you’re in a relationship or a marriage where you both act, you, you can tend to just have a lot of time away from each other. And what we were gifted with this was forced time together.”

Not only did they make it, they decided to take a huge next step with their family!

“And because of that, we ended up having a baby, you know, we, um, that’s what, that’s the major thing that came out of the pandemic for me was, was becoming a father. So I had a, I had a quite profound and amazing experience during the, during this, this last year and a half. And yeah, of course it was anxiety-inducing and strange and odd. And I didn’t see my friends and family, but on the whole, my friends and family are all healthy, I’m now a father. Like I on the whole, I had, uh, had quite a very lucky experience over the past year and a half. I know others who haven’t.”

He really does sound happy and grounded. We couldn’t be more excited for him and his future.

And neither could he from the sound of it! His next big project is the long-awaited, long delayed Marvel Studios film The Eternals, in which he plays a character who, in the comic books at least, is a superhero called the Black Knight who eventually becomes an Avenger!

Obviously he stays pretty tight-lipped about that upcoming adventure, saying only:

“I think, you know, I’m, I’m a big fan of the MCU and, I, you know, so when, when they come knocking, it’s very exciting. The character, I won’t, I won’t go into why he interests me — because like you say, there’s, you know, it’s more than my life is worth to tell you, but… No. But what did interest me about that piece was that it was Chloé Zhao directing, I met her and spoke to her. I was so impressed by her. The cast was sort of phenomenal, and wide ranging and diverse, and it just looked like they were doing something really different, with this movie.”

The cast includes Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Ma Dong-Seok, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, and of course his GOT brother from another mother, Richard Madden. He offered only:

“And yeah, I can’t tell you much about it, but we filmed that pre pandemic and it’s coming out. Finally. It was sort of frustrating. You got pushed back so much, but now it is, you know, be going on doing some press for that soon. And it’s really exciting.”

In case you didn’t know, it was just five months ago that the Game of Thrones alum and Rose Leslie welcomed their first child together, a baby boy. And while the couple is super private about their family life, Harington actually touched on his new duties as a dad during an interview with Access Hollywood. The 34-year-old actor kept it real when asked what has been the biggest surprises of fatherhood so far, saying:

“They tell you and they don’t tell you [about fatherhood]. Everyone goes, ‘Look, it’s big, what you’re about to go through is big.’ You have no way of knowing that until it happens. Then, what surprises you is you go, ‘Oh, this goes on forever.’ Like, you don’t get a break from it.”

That is for sure! The Modern Love star then went on to explain how the couple has actually grown closer since becoming parents, detailing:

“Every day, I wake up and I look after this little human and now we’re part of a unit together. I think the thing that surprises me most about fatherhood is you are now a unit, the three of you, and that’s a whole new dynamic you need to find — and pretty much find every day as he grows and changes. It’s a beautiful thing, it really is.”

Back in September 2020, the actress confirmed the news of her pregnancy after debuting her baby bump in the UK magazine MAKE. While the new momma never shared details about their little one, Leslie touched on spending some downtime with Kit at their place in East Anglia, saying:

“What a glorious thing to be able to run to the countryside and recoup. It’s a great privilege to be surrounded by greenery, birdsong and hedgerows, and our delightful neighbours. It’s so peaceful.”

Diversion at its finest, LOLz! Rose then gushed about her pregnancy about a month later, telling The New York Post:

“I am thrilled to be expecting, and I can’t wait to meet the new member of our family!”

It’s not just the Stark house words, it’s also a warning to prepare for the coming storm — so… what were they trying to prepare us for? It’s still unclear, but obviously many fans began to speculate on the possibility of a continuation of the series. After all, wouldn’t fans be WAY more interested in a Season 9 — especially if it corrected some of the worst parts of Season 8 — than the umpteen spinoffs and prequels HBO is working on?? (We mean… a Flea Bottom show?? Seven hells…)

In any case, the renewed fervor got us thinking… who REALLY won the Game Of Thrones?? We mean in real life.

This week The Sun released a “rich list” of the estimated net worths of the show’s stars, and you may be surprised who’s on top IRL. Financial expert Gemma Godfrey explained to the outlet how some stars ended up making more bank than others who made same — or much less — on the hit show:

“You can see that some people have cashed in on their talent and success and have continued to build their wealth by pursuing more films. Others have taken the money that they’ve earned and invested it, hoping that it will make more money. The people who set up production companies or invested early have seen their net worth increase the most.”

Who is doing the best? Ch-ch-check out the top 10 (well, really the top 12) in our list (below)!

10. Gwendoline Christie

Gwendoline Christie was a virtual unknown before her role as Brienne of Tarth. But she instantly became a fan fave, and as Godfrey puts it:

“She’s had huge success on the show and she’s leveraging that by going to films in the same genre. She’s going for the films which have bigger and bigger budgets. She’s set herself up as a corporate entity to do so in a savvy way.”

Those projects include the massive Star Wars sequels, in which she played villain Captain Phasma, and now the upcoming Sandman adaptation in which she plays a gender-swapped Lucifer. Hot stuff. According to the paper, Gwendoline and her company, Christie Ventures Ltd, have a grand total of about 5.3 million.

9 (tie). Natalie Dormer

In addition to her role as Margaery Tyrell, Natalie Dormer has had high profile roles in the Hunger Games movies, the TV series The Tudors and Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, and several movies, including Darkness which she co-wrote and produced. She’s also made brand ambassador deals with Crocs and Nespresso. Godfrey says:

“Natalie’s an entrepreneurial one. She’s set up different production companies and has also been doing some brand deals to diversify her earnings.”

All of that has earned her an estimated $6.13 million.

9 (tie). Maisie Williams

Also at $6.13 million we find Maisie Williams, who stole hearts (and faces) as assassin Arya Stark.

Unfortunately the 2-time Emmy nominee hasn’t found another role that both showcases her considerable acting talent AND gets seen on thousands of screens. Mostly she’s been acting in tons of indie films, and her one recent blockbuster attempt was the doomed final Fox X-Men movie New Mutants. Currently she’s filming Danny Boyle‘s Sex Pistols film, in which she’s playing Jordan Mooney, a somewhat forgotten frontwoman credited by many with being one of the inventors of punk rock. Considering the success of music biopics in the past couple years, maybe this could be the next big breakthrough?

However, outside of show business, Maisie is investing in other business, too! She invested at the ground level in a social media app called Daisie which links artists for collaboration. Godfrey explains:

“Maisie is fascinating because she’s branched out into tech. We’ve seen this with Ashton Kutcher investing in Uber. You see people who have built their wealth in one industry and used it to invest. It means you earn money while you sleep.”

It’s good work if you can get it!

8 (tie). Alfie Allen

As Theon Greyjoy, Alfie Allen surprisingly lasted the entire series — making some decent bank in the process. But he’s also been acting since he was 12. His mom is producer Alison Owen, who cast him in historical biopic Elizabeth, and his sister is of course pop star Lily Allen.

Thanks to nonstop roles in everything from John Wick to Jojo Rabbit, he and his production company Kubi Kid have accrued a net worth of about $8 million! As Godfrey says:

“He is from a theatrical family. He may have had good advice from them.”

Not to mention good opportunities. Good thing he’s making the most of them!

8 (tie). Sophie Turner

Just as Sansa Stark deserved the Most Improved Player award by the end of the series, Sophie Turner has transformed from an unknown pre-teen to an international movie star over the course of the decade the show was on, notably becoming a rare bright spot in the ill-fated final wave of X-Men movies. Godfrey notes:

“She’s gone into bigger and bigger films. Going into the X-Men franchise has really helped increase her earnings.”

It certainly raised her profile. As did her love life — she’s now married and has a child with pop star (and gazillionaire) Joe Jonas. Like Alfie, she also has an estimated $8 million — and if you combine that with hubby’s approximate $50 mil?? That kid is going to have a nice education, that’s for sure.

7. Lena Headey

Obviously Lena Headey was one of the more well-known actresses cast in the pilot, having been in movies like The Brothers Grimm and 300, but it was Thrones that really turned her into a household name. If you’re looking for deliciously evil, there’s just no one better right now. And by the end of the show she was getting paid like a Lannister, too — reportedly making over a million bucks an episode the final season!

With her company Peephole Productions, she’s setting up even more great roles for herself, like a TV adaptation of the bestselling novel Beacon 23. She’s already worth just over $9 million, but according to Godfrey she’s got a good chance to make a lot more in the coming years:

“What Lena is doing is going all in on herself. What this latest deal shows is that she is going to be the female lead in a series but she’s also going to executive-produce, which is a very smart thing to do. Where she’s going to make her money is by making sure these projects are a success and she can actually get a cut.”

6. Kit Harington

If anyone could be considered the star of the ensemble, it was Kit Harington; however, as Jon Snow he was still making around a third of what Lena Headey was by the end. Remember, he was an unknown straight out of drama school when the show began, so that’s still a HUGE raise.

After the failure of his blockbuster attempt Pompeii (you know, like Titanic with a volcano), he’s taken the reins of his career. Over the past couple years, he’s been in a lot of diverse projects, from the very silly Andy Samberg sports mockumentary 7 Days In Hell to the historical drama Gunpowder, which he also wrote and produced (the subject, Guy Fawkes co-conspirator Robert Catesby, is one of his ancestors). Godfrey is impressed, saying:

“He’s taken his success from starring in a show to then writing his own show and launching companies. He’s been very savvy. He’s capitalized on his success and he’s used that to branch out into different areas where he can make money.”

Thus far he’s accrued an estimated net worth of over $12.1 million — a number that might get a boost if his stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he’s playing a character called the Black Knight in the long-delayed The Eternals) extends past one film.

5. Emilia Clarke

The other “star” of GoT, Emilia Clarke has had one of the most successful film careers after the success of the show, starring in rom com Last Christmas, the Star Wars prequel film Solo, and more. She also started her own production company called Magical Thinking Pictures.

She’s been successful in her deals with Dior in 2015, Dolce & Gabbana in 2018, and most recently as a global ambassador for Clinique. Godfrey says:

“She’s a breakout star because of her acting but she is now going to try to monetize it in different industries — in fashion, in beauty and jewelry.”

Thus far it’s been working fine. She has approximately 13.1 million all told, and the latest casting news — that she, too, is joining the MCU in the Disney+ show Secret Invasion with Samuel L. Jackson.

4. Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa may only have been in the show for a handful of episodes, but he made sure to make his time onscreen count. After Khal Drogo was killed off (and his Conan reboot bombed hard) he was not doing well. He revealed recently:

“We were starving after Game Of Thrones. I couldn’t get work. It’s very challenging when you have babies and you’re completely in debt.”

But his casting as Aquaman a couple years later changed everything. While Justice League was a big disappointment, the solo film was a HUGE hit, making over a BILLION dollars at the box office and establishing the late Dothraki leader as a bona fide movie star. But he didn’t spend the time unwisely — he’s been working a TON, both in indie films and TV series, much of which he’s producing himself. Godfrey says:

“Jason backed himself in certain projects and it’s paying off. If you’ve seen the bottom and survived it, it gives you confidence to take more risk with your career.”

The risks so far have made him an estimated $14.2 million. He can be seen next in the star-studded cast of the Dune remake — and then of course he’s got Aquaman 2 on the horizon…

3. Peter Dinklage

Peter Dinklage‘s multiple Emmy-winning performance as Tyrion Lannister has won him not just acclaim but also a slew of roles. He’s appeared in both the X-Men and Avengers franchises, as well as award winners like I Care A Lot and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Recently he and his manager David Ginsberg founded a production company called Estuary Films, through which he produced and starred in the post-apocalyptic drama I Think We’re Alone Now. Godfrey says:

“Peter’s been doing this for absolutely years. He’s been very strategic and has had a fantastic career. He’s doing adverts as well. He’s been very savvy. Peter understands the industry after working in it for a long time.”

That time has earned him an estimated $15.2 million so far.

2. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

Surprised? While Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is still known in the US almost exclusively as Jaime Lannister, he’s also been a movie star in his native Denmark for over two decades. He even wrote a film, 1998’s Wildside. Godfrey explains:

“He wrote a film so that shows other strings to his bow. He’s had an entire career in Denmark, which meant he had a foundation he could leverage when he did Game Of Thrones. Launching his own production company shows he’s savvy.”

That production company, Ill Kippers, should help him expand on what he’s already earned, an estimated $16.16 million.

1. Sean Bean

Yes, he may not have made it out of Season One of Game of Thrones, but remember: Sean Bean has been killed in a LOT of big projects, for many years. He was a Bond villain in GoldenEye, he was Boromir in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, he surprisingly survived Troy… And more recently he’s starred in the TV series Legends and Snowpiercer.

The man has been working for decades, and his bank account shows it; he has an estimated net worth of $27.3 million. Godfrey sums it up:

“Sean is the steady patriarch here, reflecting his character in the show. He has been working hard in the industry for more than 30 years, building up his net worth with some great roles. Sean has also been producing films, putting his earnings to good use and magnifying his wealth.”

The Game of Thrones stars have officially welcomed their first child together, and have confirmed the news by stepping out with the newborn in London on February 16. Neither actor has publicly commented on the news, but Kit’s rep confirmed to E! News that he and Rose welcomed a baby boy and are “very very happy!”

This precious milestone comes over two years after the on-screen and off-screen lovers tied the knot in Scotland after dating on and off since 2012. A source said at the time:

“The wedding was perfect. Family and friends were elated for Rose and Kit. It was a day of love and celebration and you could see it on everyone’s faces.”

The married couple, who famously met and fell in love starring alongside each other on Game Of Thrones, will soon become a party of three. The 33-year-old actress is pregnant and she debuted the news by showing off her growing baby bump for the latest issue of the U.K.’s Make Magazine. Wow, we couldn’t be more excited for the cute pair!

Ursula Lake, a photographer who worked on the cover shoot, took to Instagram and shared one truly stunning pic of Rose wearing a Stella McCartney gown while cradling her midsection.

What a lovely shot and the smile on her face really says it all, doesn’t it? With this news, these two join fellow GOT alum Sophie Turner who also became a first-time parent earlier this year with husband Joe Jonas. We guess the Stark pack really did survive, eh? LOLz.

In all seriousness, this is surely happy news for Kit and Rose who were first linked in 2012, got engaged in September 2017, and tied the knot two years later in Scotland in June 2019. During her chat with the British glossy, Leslie declined to share any details about the sex of her baby or when exactly she’s due. However, she did open up about her time on the HBO hit show that brought her and her husband together, calling it “an incredible experience.” Still, these days, she prefers kicking at home with Harington away from the spotlight in their cozy old Tudor manor house in East Anglia, which she jokingly called “the house that Jon Snow built.”

Sounds like the perfect place to bunker down and welcome a child, especially since there seems to be a pandemic baby boom happening right now!

While we wait for more details about the pregnancy, Kit might’ve already given us a clue about he’ll raise his future children based on a recent interview with The Telegraph. He explained to the outlet that his mother, former playwright Deborah Jane Catesby, gave him and his brother a gender-fluid upbringing when they were young:

“I asked for a Mighty Max and she bought me a Polly Pocket. I asked for an Action Man and I got a doll — it was very gender fluid from the word go. And I went with it.”

It’s quite possible he might do the same, especially since he credited those early parenting moves with his current desire to play more progressive characters going forward.
