The struggle is REAL!
Blake Lively is such a dedicated mother — but sometimes that means being wracked with mom guilt when she breaks away to work! Aw!
While promoting her new film It Ends With Us on Monday, the actress opened up about the challenges of balancing work and home life — something so many people can relate to! While sharing why she loves her co-star Jenny Slate so much, the Gossip Girl alum told ET:
“Both of us really love our personal lives a lot and we love our job. And we love our work and we take it very, very seriously, and we work very, very, very hard, and we completely immerse ourselves in our work. But who we are is defined by our personal lives so much more than our work, and we can be both of those things at once.”

The movie star — who shares James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4, and Olin, 1, with husband Ryan Reynolds — continued:
“When you’re working, sometimes you feel guilty for, you know, not being in your personal life in those hours you’re at work. And then when you’re at work, you feel guilty by being distracted by wishing that you were at your personal life.”
Oof. So tough — especially when you remember how seriously she takes her family time! Back in February, the A Simple Favor star revealed she and her hubby agreed “not to work at the same time” when they started dating, explaining to ET:
“When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time. So that we could always prioritize our personal life.”
Obviously, this is not without its challenges, she dished:
“That takes working really hard when we’re not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that; it takes balance.”
It’s also not something either of them were used to, the 36-year-old reflected:
“I’m used to working hard and going and going and going and going and not stopping. […] Especially, ‘Gossip Girl’ was six years of my life, and we were sometimes shooting three episodes at once.”
But taking time to slow down occasionally and take turns working has been a great thing for their family. The Free Guy lead opened up about the “rule” to Access Hollywood in 2020, reflecting:
“We don’t split up. Like, I shoot movies and my wife shoots movies, and we go travel all over the place, and we just all go together. […] I think that’s been the best part of it is that we really don’t spend a lot of time apart. I get to spend a lot of time with my girls.”
And Blake and Ryan still get to do some amazing projects — like their two latest films, It Ends With Us and Deadpool & Wolverine! They just have to schedule things out wisely, as they’ve been doing. And yet, despite going above and beyond for her little ones, Blake still faces mom guilt. Just shows how unavoidable that is sometimes!
