Billie Eilish is Oscar-nominated for her Barbie song, but she couldn’t have done it without Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig!
On Tuesday, the 22-year-old reacted to her 2023 hit What Was I Made For? receiving a Best Original Song nom. A big achievement!! But like other prominent faces of the Barbie movie, she didn’t skimp out on giving its director and star/producer their flowers.

On Instagram, the Happier Than Ever singer shared a picture of her and Margot embraced in a tight hug followed by a second slide of the scene in Barbie in which her song plays. She included a thankful message from herself and her brother and consistent collaborator Finneas O’Connell:
“We are so incredibly honored to receive a nomination for ‘What Was I Made For?’ As lifelong fans of film, music in film and the Academy Awards, this means everything to us. We are so grateful to the Academy, its members, and to be recognized alongside so many songwriters that we respect and admire.”
The pair then gave a shout out to Greta, who didn’t receive a Best Director nom, and her husband and screenwriting partner Noah Baumbach:
“Our deepest gratitude and thanks go out to the incomparable Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for their genius vision and execution, the entire Barbie cast and crew, Lucky Chap Entertainment and the Warner Bros. Pictures team.”
They also made mention of musical collaborators Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt for their contributions as well:
“Thank you to Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt for weaving our song into the fabric and heart of this film so well.”
Lastly, the brother-sister duo gave a massive thanks to Margot, who was controversially snubbed from receiving a Best Actress nomination:
“And a special shout out to Margot Robbie for her incredible foresight as a producer and brilliant performance that resonated with us so profoundly when writing this song. We are truly honored. Thank you.”
This is Billie and Finneas’ second Oscar nomination, with them winning the award for Best Original Song for their James Bond hit No Time To Die in 2022. So successful and SO young!
Still, the Barbie fallout persists far beyond Billie. Fans were shocked on Tuesday when the nominations were revealed and Ryan Gosling got a Best Supporting Actor nod for Ken, but Margot didn’t receive any cred for Barbie — which was, of course, a major point in the movie. Ryan and co-star America Ferrera, who received a Best Supporting Actress nom for her role in the film, subsequently SLAMMED the Academy for their decision.
It seems like everyone but Greta and Margot got their recognition, to be honest… But what are YOUR thoughts, Perezcious readers? Sound OFF in the comments down below!
